As we draw the curtain on season 2011 we can look back with pride knowing we have taken our game to a new level. With the challenge of taking on Kenmore to book a place in the GF we knew we would have to bring our A game to have a show. With Kenmore coasting through the season we knew if we could get the jump on them early we knew that they would be suspect to our physical presence.
Our first quarter was what we asked for but for the fact we had 10 scoring shots to 3 we could only muster a 2 point lead. We knew we required a big effort in the second and this is exactly what we did. Keeping Kenmore to 3 goals with a decent breeze but only kicking 3 points ourselves was a great effort by all but the fact was we needed to kick straight to stay in the game. Kicking 2.11 to half time was disappointing for the boys but we were in it upto our teeth and knew a massive effort was required to keep in the game. The ball see sawed between both forward lines and it seemed Kenmore were about to break it open but to our credit we fought back late to be within 3 goals at oranges. I knew I needed to bring something special to address the boys and by the looks on their faces and the tears in people’s eyes I was pretty sure I nailed it on the head. We knew 30 minutes was going to be the difference between glory and failure and I can say with pride that all players put their hand up to try and will each other over the line. At no stage in the last quarter did anyone drop their head. We tried all day but in the end it was a 5 goal win to Kenmore though the game would tell a different story. A couple of cheap goals late helped the margin but in truth it was a fight to the end for which I am proud of our never say die attitude.
Thank you to all the parents and mates who either ran water or waved the flags. A big thank you to Linde Martin for being our trainer all year. It makes a great difference knowing we have someone willing to put their hand up week in week out. Thanks to Debbie Dickfos for kicking off our season as Team Manager. When things were looking grim early Deb got Sandgate on board to supply players and was also superb at getting all the subs paid before we kicked off the season. Thanks to John Haggerty for taking over the role in the second half of the season. It was great to see him put his hand up to help out when required. To our runner Larry Gould I say cheers for putting up with me and making you run around like a lunatic. To my loyal assistant coach Chris “Mad Dog” Nicholson once again thank you for another great year. You were probably sick of listening to me on the phone every day but you are the straight one in the comedy act. I enjoyed our time and am thankful to have you as a friend. Finally, to my wife Leanne and boys James and Michael, thanks for coming on the ride once again. You make the game much more enjoyable knowing you are there week in week out.
