After two frustrating weeks of no footy due to both weather and a team forfeiting, the tigers under 12's again got to play some footy, once again at our home away from home this year Alex Hills !!
Training through the week was mainly to do with the players maintaining their focus and urgency, and after no football being able to again come out with a performance that we know the team is capable of.
Before the game the players were reminded of keeping focus and urgency and it was noted during our warm up that they all seemed switched on and ready to go. And so it proved to be in the first quarter, where in our last couple of games we have started rather slowly, our boys came out ready to play and it showed, both in our dominance of the quarter in terms of possession, and also more importantly, on the scoreboard. Six scoring shots ( four of those goals ) to nil was definitely a reflection of how well the boys played in the first quarter.
Of course we all know the game does not go for one quarter and it was during the second quarter the boys took there foot off the pedal for a little while, and allowed Alex Hills to get a bit of possession and take control of the tempo of the game. Fortunately for us they did not convert that on the scoreboard and thanks to our backline of Willy, Jade, Brodie, Mark, Josh, Kyle and Sean who continually repelled the Alex Hills forwards , we went into half time still in control of the game.
Half time was a chance to let the boys know that in this competition any little advantage you give to your opposition will be taken and when you decide to take it easy and spectate for a bit you can quickly have a game slip from your grasp.
The third quarter the boys again started a little slowly but thanks to Alex Hills again kicking badly ( four points for the quarter ) we slowly got our game back on track and by the end of the quarter had regained a bit of control.
At 3/4 time we asked the boys to not panic so much when in possession of the footy and to try to maintain control of the ball by being accurate with our passing both by hand and foot. To the boys credit they did that in the last quarter and were able to run out fairly comfortable winners.
Today we had what could be called break out games for a few of our players. Dan Maher had by far his best game of the season, continually getting first hands to the ball and giving our onballers the chance to use the footy our way. Billy Bryant had perhaps his best game also, showing what a solid attack on the footy and clean hands can do to your confidence and how much it helps the team to have someone to kick to with confidence. Jade Emblow continued to be a dominant player in the backline for us and is starting to have the confidence to use his size to his advantage and keep his man from getting the footy. The same for Willy, Sean and Brodie when it comes to that. Also to Jack Roney and Nick Gregory who for two of our smaller but more experienced players, both at different stages of the game showed how when you make the ball your focus you not only get yourself into the game but lift the players around you by your actions. Just what we expect from our leaders. I should not forget Declan, Ryan and Josh in this who all continued to have their usual impact on our games. Well done boys !!
Once again the under 12's get to sing the song !!!
