7 days in football can be a long time, except for when you're sweating on injuries. After a brutal game against Strathpine last week there were plenty of players fighting time. Arriving at Calamvale with a new look side, including first gamer Tom McMahon, the Tigers sat and watched a great game of reserves footy knowing that the senior team needed to follow suit.
The first quarter started and it was Calamvale who got the first two goals through some lucky bounces. Keeping focus and through some great work from Jenks and Tommy, it was Redcliffe who hit back quick. With Fitzy starting to run freely on the wing, the Tigers started to dominate and showed the type of footy expected of the team by kicking 7 goals straight to end the quarter.
The second quarter started and you could see that the Leopards had switched on and it wasn't going to be all Tigers. Scotty Davis and Toolie worked hard down back and were restricting the Calamvale forwards while Higgys showed a few signs of the battle had been building. We went into half time with a 10.2 to 5.6 lead.
Knowing that last time we met Calamvale, their biggest effort came in the 3rd quarter and this game was playing to the same tune. To make things worse we lost Taz with a knee and we needed other players to step up. There were encouraging signs from Fitzy, Niven, Jenks and Tommy that we were going to fight this one out. Calamvale completely out played Redcliffe and held the Tigers to just 6 behinds while Calamvale kicked 3 goals 4 which brought our lead back to 11 points.
With their tails up and full of confidence, Calamvale came through with the first blow and got the first goal through Stevens, bringing the lead back to just 5 points and the home crowd starting to come into the match. The next 10 minutes is where Redcliffe showed their improvement from earlier in the year with steadier footy and some great team work. With some real courage it was the Tigers who fought hard to turn the game in our favour. Captain Josh Bond lead from the front with a hand in 3 of our last 5 goals, the reserves players on the hill showed their support and the momentum increased. Through some great work in the back line from Cez, Toolie and Davis as well as our midfield starting to utilise the ball better we controlled the game from this point on. With seconds left on the clock, a fitting end had Bondy sealing the win and keeping the season alive. While the 3rd quarter was a concern, it was a real positive in the way the Tigers didn't drop off and fought hard to win the match. Great games to Tommy, Niven and Fitzy along with Jenks, Sauce and Jase.
Next week we have a bye and an opportunity to get those niggling injuries under control. With training as normal Tuesday night, players will be given Thursday night off but are encouraged to attend and support the 18's in their last home game on Sunday.
