It was a perfect day for our biggest home game, with all the past players and the crowd at the game, you could tell the importance of this match. I wish more could be said for the 22 players that turned up. It was a disappointing match right from the beginning. At the start of the match Strathpine dominated. In the first quarter, Redcliffe showed glimpses but as so often happens this year, inconsistencies and skill deficiencies were the difference. Strathpine was clinical with their disposals and hitting their targets. Going into the first quarter break the score was 7.7 to 3.1 in favour of Strathpine.

Second quarter started and we had already suffered two injuries. We had to tighten up and be cleaner with the ball, all of which did not happen. Our lack of commitment in contests was proving to be pivotal. While Strathpine had numbers at every drop of the ball, the same could not be said for our Tigers with only a few players standing up. The highlight of the first half was Foley with 3 goals and proving to be a player hard to beat. Half time came and some of the players were given a message that led to some soul searching. With a score of 15.10 to 5.4 we had to be much more competitive.

After half time, you could be mistaken for thinking you were watching a different game. Tigers started to match their opponents with no team really dominating the 3rd quarter, the boys showed much improvement. The fourth quarter started with no bench left, the Tigers were asked to show their commitment to the team. Much more competitive Tigers got the early run and started showing they could play some good football. The running and carrying of the ball that was missing in the first half was back and the Tigers looked a better team. Playing the last quarter with only 16 men, the Tigers finished kicking the last two goals which made the first half more disappointing. Proving the point that we can be more competitive with 16 players than we can be with 22.

While it was disappointing to play so poorly on such a big occasion there were a few players that could hold their head up high; Ben Foley with 5 goals, Lazy with 5 goals, Gunny with his devastating attack at the footy, Yahoo’s second half was fantastic, Jenks played well injured and Shane Ward had one of the best halfs all year.

With three games to go, we face a must win game against Calamvale next week. With some players put on notice, the heat is now on the senior playing group who can expect a hard and intense week at training.
