Team Effort!!

A very wet home ground greeted us in our important game against Grange. This was a huge opportunity to keep the momentum we have built over the last 5 weeks going.

The first quarter was a very sloppy affair with both teams still trying to play dry weather footy. Tom Roney and Tys Brown were getting plenty of it and with strong bodies in Jake Haggerty, Josh Lowe and Ben Strang the signs were looking good. With scoring hard to come by scores were locked together at 1 goal apiece.

The second quarter looked promising from the start with JT and all on ballers getting on top through the middle and you could sense the boys were rising to the occasion. Christian Sands was dominant at CHF with good back up from Brad Spencer whose clean hands in the wet were making a big difference. Unfortunately we could not put the score on the board and with our boys scoring 5 behinds to 1 for the quarter it could have been curtains for Grange.

Things started to heat up in the 3rd quarter with Redcliffe dominating play. With most of the play moving from half forward to half back we could feel our physical pressure rising on the Grange opponents. To their credit they transferred play well in the conditions and put on a couple of goals. We had our chances but once again we were poor in front of goal. Grange took a 6 point lead into the final quarter but we had 4 more scoring shots and there was an air of anticipation amongst the group.

The final stanza got under way at a ferocious pace. JT was feeding Bomber who in turn was feeding Spooner to drive the ball forward. Neither team was gaining the upper hand and when the clock ticked over the 10 minute mark we were starting to get nervous. This is when we clicked into gear. Mitch Purvis found space but his shot missed and then Kieran Hart broke through a much bigger opponent to again create a scoring opportunity. With the ball hovering around our forward line it took cult hero Jake “SNAKE” Sammut to kick the ball forward hitting Joey Gould on the chest. Joey calmly slotted the goal giving us a 2 point lead with 5 minutes to play. We again moved the ball from the centre and kept up our tackling and bumping pressure on our opponents. This created another opportunity for Joey to slot home the sealer. With some advice from the coach and crowd he did just that and put us out to an 8 point lead. With about 3 minutes remaining there was still fight in Grange. They propelled the ball forward and had a couple of opportunities but our back 6 held fast and we walked away with a 7 point victory. A great TEAM effort against quality opposition.

Special mention to Luke “Do you like my hair” Wilkinson for backing up after the U16’s. Another solid performance in both grades.
