It was a very warm day that greeted the U18’s for their first hit out of the season against Nambour. With only 17 to choose from it was a great relief when 2 of the U16’s put their hand up to play after driving back from Alex Hills.
Early on was a close battle with scoring hard to come by. Marcus Gregory was our main focal point but sprayed a couple of shots. Just to see him on the park after breaking his leg was inspiring for all. QTR time Redcliffe 0.2.02 Nambour 1.4.10
The second quarter started the same as both sides could not break clear. Whilst we were having trouble putting it through the big sticks, our defensive pressure was coming to the fore as Nambour struggled to venture forward with any fluency. Tys Brown received a heavy knock to the head and Christian Sands lost 3 teeth but both players showed true grit by wanting to get back out there. Sam Munsie had shut out their full forward and with big Snake having a crack in the ruck, there was an expectation that we could go on in the second half. ½ Time Redcliffe 0.4.04 Nambour 3.6.24.
The 3rd quarter see sawed between half forward and half back until Nambour broke the shackles and scored a couple of quick goals. Our boys responded with some inspirational play from Kieran Hart to set up our first goal. Soutter, Keating-Jones and Josh Lowe were increasing their pressure on the Nambour forwards and kept the wolves at bay though at ¾ time the score margin had blown out to 34 points. ¾ time Redcliffe 1.4.10 Nambour 6.8.44
The boys received a bit of a rev up at the break and responded accordingly. When we registered our first of the term you could see our boys get an extra boost of energy and the self belief was rising. Another 2 quick goals and all of a sudden we were in with a chance with 10 mins remaining. Nambour slotted one home to extend the margin but an intelligent shot on goal from the boundary from new recruit Mitch Purvis got us back to 16 points. Sadly that was where it ended but the boys walked off the ground knowing they put every last bit into the game.
Congratulations to Tyson Brown on his 50th game. To come back on after his head knock and play well was a testament to his character.
Special mention to the boys who backed up for 2 games. Spooner and Joey in the seniors and Wilko and Matt Spencer in the 16’s
