4 points is what both Uni and Redcliffe turned up to battle for this weekend, in a game that signified keeping the season alive for both teams. With the initial match in round 2 washed out, both teams didn't know what to expect. Coming off a disappointing loss last week, we had our share of disbelievers. It was make or break for our senior team.
After last week the players knew that it was time to stop making excuses and take ownership of their season. With plenty of injuries, there were a few opportunities given to the in-form two's players. With training this week at high intensity, the players gave signs that they were ready for this clash. Once the siren sounded, the Tigers were off and running with great tap work in the ruck from Hilly. Our on-ballers gave the first scoring opportunity to Shane Ward which saw the first of many goals. It didn't take long for our second chance to arrive and again it was Ward lining up to a have a shot but he kicked it wide, scoring only a behind. Uni then worked the ball up the ground and showed that it wasn't going to be all Redcliffe and they had their tails up with their first goal of the day. As the first quarter came to an end, it was the Tigers in front with 5.5.35 to 1.6.12 with both teams wasting chances.
With Shaz and Jase working well up forward and Hilly pushing forward to keep the pressure on, it was the Tigers run from the back line that was most impressive in the 2nd quarter. With Cez showing why he is becoming one of our most important players with his rebound and link up play, a welcome site back this week. Jenks, Sauce and Ward were all working hard and giving great ball to our forwards. Captain Josh Bond gave a timely reminder of what he is capable of by continuely showing disregard for his body and putting himself on the line for the benefit of the team. Shaz kicked his 4th goal on the run from the boundary and as the quarter came to an end it was the Tigers who had dominated the 2nd, going in at 11.12.78 to 1.7.13.
Knowing that it was only half time, the coaching staff made it very noted that the job was only half done. So far this year we had been struggling to string four quarters together and constantly allowed teams back into matches. It was up to the players to mentally switch on before we retook the field.
It was Uni who started the quarter better scoring the first 2 goals which left the Redcliffe Tigers Coach and support team with a few frowns on their faces. Unlike other games where we let teams continue to score, we fought hard to turn the momentum and get the ball back into our hands. The team showed composure that was lacking earlier on in the season. While Shaz cooled his heels on the bench, Toolie moved up to forward and showed just how versatile he is by kicking the last two goals in the 3rd quarter, leaving the scoreboard on 16.15.111 to 4.10.34
Talking to the players at 3 quarter time I was far from happy. Players were starting to get a little goal hungry and not playing to our team structure. The message put to the players was improve or spend time on the pine, and respond they did. Improvement was visable with our team structure and discipline was back and our talk all over the ground clearly heard. The last quarter turned into a dominant quarter, with Shaz kicking his 7th and 8th goal while Toolie kicked his 4th. The Tigers showed that they wanted to finish the game in style with our midfield on top of every attempt made by Uni and rebounded through our big men in Jase and Hilly. When Sauce kicked his second goal, you could see the delight in his eyes as he doesn't get many chances on goal. A 10 goal last quarter saw the game well and truly beyond the reach of the opposition and for the first time this year, the Tigers played a full 4 quarters of footy. The game ended with our biggest score for the season, 26.22.178 to 5.12.42.
While everyone played their role this week, there were a few stand outs. Captain Josh Bond stood head and shoulders above his opponent and created opportunities for his team mates all day. Jenks and Sauce were at their best and Wardy showed just what we have been missing all year. Jase and Hilly were dangerous in the ruck and more than a handful up forward. Shaz, Toolie and Foley put the icing on the cake kicking 14 goals between them.
Next week we take on the league leaders in Robina who will provide us with the biggest test in Div 2. While our season continues to improve, it will take our best to knock them off, a challenge being put to the players and one I'm sure they are looking forward to. With 3 wins from our last 4 games, lets keep the momentum and the good work going. See you all at training.
