Sunday 5 September; Preliminary Final
Under 16’s Match Report vs Ferny Grove (The Father’s day Clash)
Well the pre match routine started with Tags as usual being prepared and he had all of the boys focussed on the job at hand. The motto for today was being “Mr September”. He is the one that will do anything for the team and himself to make that final day in September. The emphasis was on attacking the football, body contact, playing in front and being rewarded by the umpires.
The setup of the team was basically the same from the previous game except for Liam being dropped at the request of Ferny Grove and the AFLBJ.. Conditions were on the slippery side with rain falling all night and into the afternoon. Craig was still missing due to a knee injury and Terry was the runner again.
Benny won the toss and chose to kick to the southern end. The quarter started with Clarky in the ruck Benny, Corbs and Jayke in the middle. Corbs was awarded a free kick in the centre and passed to an unmarked Al at half forward for a mark. Al transferred the ball by foot to find Wilko in the forward pocket. He duly went back and slotted the first goal of the game. Wilko was involved in the next goal as he was the only player with his head over the ball and rewarded with a free kick. Wilko found Keeno at full forward who marked strongly went back and kicked the goal. In the backline the boys were playing strong and holding up Ferny’s attacks. Corbs provided a well timed smother to save a shot on goal. Matty put his body on the line by backing into their full forward to take a courageous mark and prevent another scoring opportunity. Braeden, Patty, Zac O’Hea and Trent were providing great rebound efforts to our wingers in Mitch and Petey.
Quarter time score: Redcliffe 2.2.14 to Ferny Grove 0.1.1
The quarter time address was given by Tags and he mentioned to maintain the pressure on Ferny as they were front runners and to ensure that there was scoreboard pressure applied.
The second quarter got under way with Benny and Corbs combining to clear the ball out centre into our forward line. Woody and Jed were thrown into the forward line to boost our attack and along with Alex on the wing were beginning to get the feel of the game. Braeden was proving to be a stumbling block at half back with his marking in the wet conditions and holding Ferny at bay. Wilko, Petey, Benny, Corbs and Al were giving huge efforts around the ground by throwing themselves into every contest. Our only goal for the quarter came through Jayke after a determined run off halfback into the forward line where he received a pass from Trent and kicked a goal on the run. Pat had to come off half way through the quarter due to a knock on his leg which had impaired his run.
Halftime score: Redcliffe 3.5.23 to Ferny Grove 0.2.2
The halftime address was delivered by Tags and emphasised how the boys should not relax and let Ferny to get back into the game. It was still going to be a tough task as the game was still there to be won as Ferny walked off the ground with a sniff of victory. The message was not to let our work rate drop and to keep the talk and pressure going.
The third quarter got under way with Clarky still in the ruck, Zac van Haaften at centre half back and Trent returned to the forward line. We were receiving the frees from playing in front as Corbs found out when he was awarded a free in the centre square and a fifty metre penalty to kick our first goal of the quarter. Our next goal went to Wilko after a passage of play down the clubhouse wing with Benny, Braeden, Al, Jayke, Alex, Keeno, Drifto and Mitch all being involved. The next goal was a result of a great diving save from Trent to hit the ball back from going through for a behind to find Drifto who kicked truly. Another freak of a goal resulted from the next forward thrust as Keeno booted the ball off the ground from 35 metres out to register a “goal of the year” effort. Marto was providing great support for the big forwards by playing that elusive forward pocket. Sean was being effective with his long kick outs from stoppage as the huddle created confusion for Ferny. Corbs produced a solid effort by clearing the ball from the backline and was unceremoniously dealt with by a Ferny opponent who laid a late hit on him. This resulted in the ball being in Drifto’s hands who was awarded three fifties to kick the easiest of goals from the goal line. The Ferny Grove players had become undisciplined in this quarter as was noticed from the coaches box as one of their players (No 22) gave me a verbal insult.
3 Quarter time score: Redcliffe 8.5.53 to Ferny Grove 0.6.6
The final address by Tags praised the boys on their efforts for the quarter and to make sure they keep applying the pressure on Ferny Grove. Tags told the boys not to get involved in any fights and to be disciplined. Scribe was spoken to at the break by the Ground Marshall as there was a complaint made by Ferny Grove coaches of talking to the their players. I mentioned to the Ground Marshall that I was communicating with our players and they had initiated unfair play and abuse towards us. Nothing more came of this.
The last quarter got under way with Benny and Al leading the way with strong attacks on the ball and backed up by Wilko, Jayke and Trent providing other options. Corbs was resting after his heavy knock; Pat made a return to the full forward line. We managed to weather the remainder of the game as most of the damage was inflicted in the third (premiership) quarter. Ferny managed two late consolation goals. Patty provided a highlight for the last quarter by intercepting a kick across goals to take a mark and take his opponent (No 22) out in the contest that was carried off the ground. Woody also had an opportunity for a goal but sprayed his effort.
As usual thanks to Terry, Geoff, Nick and all of our support staff (parents) and see you next week against our old nemesis Aspley in the Grand final.
