U14's Sensation, Rosie Pyke has added her name to the fast growing list of Redcliffe Junior players that are taking the next step and being selected to play Representative Football. Rosie has been selected in the Qld State U16 Girls team to compete at the School Sport Australia National Australian Football Championships. Games will be against VIC & WA over 4 days from Sunday 26th July to Weds 29th July, 2009, at Maroochydore Multi-Sports Complex, Fisherman’s Road, Maroochydore. (Only 3 states represented)

Girls Draw as follows:

Sunday 26th July - 3.30pm QLD v WA

Monday 27th July - 9.00am QLD v VIC

Wednesday 29th July - 9.30am QLD v WA, 3.30pm QLD v VIC

Rosie attended training last Wed at Cooparoo where Jason McCartney (High Performance Coach of the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS)/Australian Football League (AFL) program), ex Collingwood, Adelaide and North Melbourne player, spoke to players and parents and siblings for over 1and half hours not only on his experiences with his life threatening injuries received in the Bali bombings but also the need to persist and never give up on your dreams and goals and to remember all the people who help you along the way. A very inspirational speech.

Rosie will not only represent QLD and the Sandgate High School, but will proudly represent the Redcliffe Tigers Football Club who have provided a great foundation for her to further her football career.

SCHOOLGIRLS STATE TEAM TO COMPETE AT BOYS 15 YEARS & UNDER NATIONALS

The Girls Division will however be a 16 years & Under category.  This allowed more girls the opportunity from around the country to be able to compete at this level.

The coach for the team is teacher and State Women’s Captain, Joanne Butland who recently competed in the Women’s Open National Championships in Perth where Queensland finished a credible third.  It is no coincidence that Victoria and Western Australia who finished first and second at the National Championships were also invited to compete in this first for Girls Football.

“Being invited to compete at the Boys 15 years & under Championships is a great step forward for Youth Girls Football not only in Queensland but in the country” says Coach Jo Butland.  “Queensland has been fortunate enough to have been running an Under 16 State Championships for the last four years so hopefully will have the edge over the other two states which are still developing their Youth Girls Football.”

“Victoria has a strong set up in Under 18 Youth Girls Football so it will be interesting to see how they can compete at this younger age level” says AFL Qld Female Participation Coordinator Julia Price.  “We had over 70 girls nominate from the state for this team so hopefully this has really exposed Girls Football as a viable option as a winter sport”.  “We were very impressed with the skill level and commitment of the girls trialling, some travelling from as far away as Gladstone to compete in the trials in Brisbane”.

The Girls will be playing from Sunday 26 July through to Wednesday 29 July 2009 at Maroochydore Multi-Sports Complex, Fisherman’s Road, Maroochydore.
