Relay for Life 2008
Over $40,000 Raised!!!!Relay for Life 2008
The inaugural Relay for Life was held at the Redcliffe Tigers ground on
Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st of September.
Over 26 teams, adding to approximately 400 people, walked, ran, skipped and hopped their way into history by completing the very first Relay for Life to be held in our district. The Relay for Life Committee, chaired by Elly Squire, managed to raise funds in excess of $40,000 and even more importantly created more awareness of all types of Cancer and the effects it has had and continues to have in so many peoples lives.
The goal of each team was to continually move their baton around the oval for a staggering 17 and a half hours none stop, sharing the workload amongst their teammates. Commencing at 3.00pm on Saturday and with the oval aligned with tents, stalls and stage all involved were not only entertained by musical acts but provided entertainment themselves through enthusiasm, competition, colorful uniforms and clothing. Highlights would have to be the beginning when a large number of Cancer survivors of all ages started the
event with their own lap of honor. However, the moment that really pulls at the heart strings and breathes motivation would be the candle light tribute when the oval lights are turned off and candles line the oval with messages beside each one in memory of all those loved ones lost to cancer. The teams continue to walk to the sound of Josh Grobin singing You Raise Me Up during this time and it was easy to see why so many are inspired to get involved.
The teams powered through wind and rain that night and came to a halt at 8.30am on Sunday morning totally satisfied that the funds raised far outweighed the pain suffered and sleep lost.
The Redcliffe Tigers wish to thank Elly and Eddie Squire and her team for allowing us the opportunity to be involved in such a special event which is to be an annual event. The Redcliffe Tigers have already committed to holding the same event next year on September the 19th and 20th and intend having our own team involved.
We would also like to take the opportunity to thank the handful of
volunteers that supported us in manning the canteen for nearly 12 hours straight including some of the youth football boys, and hope that the club is able to show our real glory at next years event.
