Seniors Match Report

.

Coming off a bye, we had no excuses, fresh body's and plenty of confidence from our win over Calamvale. We welcomed back Ben Foley, David Gunn and our captain Josh Bond although we lost Tim Rhodes and Shaun Dowell. At the start of the game both teams where attacking but it was our backline that held up the best, with Cez and Sauce both rebounding the ball well.  It was Chappy's 2nd and 3rd efforts that was proving the difference and nearing the end of the quarter we lost Gunny with a hammy.  It put extra pressure on our defence resulting in a couple of goals to Ipswich ending the quarter in a 3.5 to 2.4,  it was quarter of missed chances.

The 2nd quarter the Tigers put their mark on the game.  Our midfield was getting first use thanks to our ruckman and our forwards leading to the right areas and had them kicking goals.  It was our backline that excelled, constantly repelling every attempt Ipswich made, entering the main break at 8.8 to 2.8 .

Half time we spoke of not getting carried away, knowing Ipswich weren't in 3rd spot out of luck.  Proving the point, a determined Ipswich came out all gun's blazing and put us under constant pressure.  They showed us just what they are cable of and the result could have been worse had it not been for a couple of late goals. Huge efforts from our big men in Bondy and Goodenough ended the quarter 11.8 to 6.13.

A few stern words and a few home truths at 3rd quarter time, made sure that every player knew what was required in our final term. When the siren sounded, we were back playing footy and there was a different team out there than in the 3rd quarter. We were back doing what was needed.  Richo's defensive pressure was back and his tackling inside the 50m arc was starting to rush the Ipswich backline. Jason Goodenough showing his around the ground game, was proving very hard to beat in a one on one.  It was one of our little men that paved the way. Mike Alkin having his best game this year was impossible to beat at ground level, taking marks in front of Ipswich's centre half forward was inspirational to his team mates.  Chappy was proving very difficult to tackle, keeping the ball moving  forward for us. Wasted opportunities and inaccurate kicking was stopping us putting the game out of reach.  Ipswich was always trying but when the siren sounded it was the Tigers who were in front with 13.16.94 to 11.13.79.

Special mentions must go to Mike Alkin, Chappy, Rohan and Jas Goodenough. Other players in Jenkins, Sauce, Richo and Lazy all played well. Josh Bond really showed why he is captain with his never say die attitude. Redcliffe at times showed that we are a very dangerous team but need to start playing 4 quarters.  While it was good to get our second win we must keep our season in check. Two wins and five losses still has the Tigers with plenty of work left to do. Our next opponent is Beenleigh, who in round one proved the better team. Lets make sure we all get to training and continue to work on the areas that need improving.

At this time I would like to send out our condolences to Michael and the Alkin family who lost a close family member on Saturday and we offer our support in their time of need.

Grant Heath

Senior Coach.
