Personal Responsibility Pays Dividends

....

With our season hanging by a thread, we welcomed the challenge of a team pushing to move into the top 5. Our team focus for the week was working for each other and taking personal responsibility.  With only 6 players left from last years premiership team (players lost through either injury or retirement), it was time we stopped making excuses and just played footy, thoughts echoed in the pre game address from Rob Dickfos. As the boys ran out onto the field, you could see from the look in their eyes that everyone understood what their job was.  The 22 players were picked because they were all hard workers. With our newly formed forward line in Lazy, Richo and the Spinks boys, we weren't sure just what we were going to get. Our midfield, which is starting to build confidence, won the hard ball early and made full use of the wind going out to a 5 to 2 goal lead.

The 2nd quarter started and we knew that Calamvale were going to come hard, and they did. Redcliffe wasted a few easy chances in front of goal and going into half time with a 4 point lead wasn't ideal.  Our half time talk was to focus on continuing to work for each other. Siren sounded and we were back underway, with the first ball up we set the tempo for the quarter, running from our midfield and our back line, keeping them in check.  This meant our forward line was getting all the ball and Lazy showed just why we put him there, kicking a couple of goals that had to be seen to be believed.  Richo gave support that had been missing all year. Redcliffe took a 5 goal lead into the final quarter. With just 30 minutes left we knew that Calamvale were going to throw everything they had at us. To their credit, Calamvale came out firing. It was time for someone to stand up and get us back on track, Matt Hendry hit the ball with raw pace and got the ball back in our hands, while Lazy added a couple more goals to his tally. 7 minutes left on the clock, Redcliffe lead by 23 points, Calamvale started to get a sniff and kicked the next two, you could hear the crowd start to ask "was it enough?"  The lead got down to just 10 points and a whisper of "oh no not again!" stirred.

Missed chances, a few skill errors and more than a few tired legs added to the nervousness of the game.  The message was sent out and the boys worked hard to keep up the intensity, the result came with just 1 minute left on the clock ... a free kick to Steve Jenkins in the centre of the ground.  Followed by a 50m penalty in Steve's favour, saw him looking at sealing the game with only 35 sec left.  A 16 point lead and a few smiles could be seen, the siren sounded.  There it was our first win. Credit to the all the players for never giving up and playing their hearts out.  There were a few players that stood out - Lazy up forward finished with 8 goals, Steve Jenkins and Lee Chapman who both played a full game on ball and who always put team before safety, Matt Hendry and Sauce did what was asked of the them and won their positions.

Thanks to the players from Calamvale that hung around after the game for a beer.  Most players stayed at the club long after the awards were done, with a great night had by all. Our focus now is to continue to focus on the hard work that must be done to ensure our season continues to improve.
